Now that spring break is over, Day 1 of teaching shop class remotely is officially underway . This will be ... Interesting. I worked several hours yesterday to finalize the video and acompanying assessment, and figuring out how distributing them through Google classroom is going to work.

I got a calendar notification that it was my turn to supervise the hallway before school. Ugh, if only.

What are you teaching them? Seems like most things would be difficult without tools? Maybe there’s some software stuff you can teach (modeling for 3D printing?) but even from a software side, I’d guess you’d be limited to software that runs in a browser.

Good luck! Teaching shop is going to be alot more tricky than my wife's English and humanity's classes.

Today’s lesson is on different styles of hammers.

There is a really great sketching program that I'm trying to get our tech department to push out to their Chromebooks, but for now sketching assignments will be done on paper, and turned in with a photograph.

Its a lot of leg work to make something meaningful. I don't want to just send links to other people's videos.

It seems tough to keep them engaged. Big drop off this week but since it seems not to count here (Michigan) not surprised.

Last I heard is that MI e -Learning days don’t count. Not sure what they are going to do with most of the summer being taken up with make-up days. In fact, this may be the first time I can say that Illinois does something better than another state!

Our district starts online classes next Monday. They are passing out Chromebooks this week to students who need them. I wonder how many of those kids who need laptops even have internet access at home. My middle schoolers are kind of taking all this in stride, since most of their social life is playing games online with their friends. My high schooler, however, is finding the isolation more of a struggle. He really wants to go back to school. Unfortunately, I just don't see it happening until fall.

Governors hands are tied due to state law waiting for State Senate to reconvene and change law. Big question on pay too. Should be fun.

Yeah... here in Ontario, the plan is to restart the semester with online learning. We will see how well that goes.

What’s the state of health for your coffee maker at home?  What’s your Plan B if it dies?

So far, I have a reasonable percentage of students participating.  We shall see how things go as time moves on.

Our school is 1:1, so we made them take them all home two weeks ago, when we knew we weren’t going to be back in the building for a while.  They distributed wifi hotspots to kids who didn’t have internet access at home.  Last week was our spring break, the week before we was an emergency shut down, so today we kick it into gear.

Coffee maker was recently replaced, and doing well.  Backup coffee maker is in the camping gear.

We’ve been doing the remote thing for a full week already. Our district has mandated that everyone migrate to Nearpod this week so that everyone is teaching on the same platform. It’s actually pretty doable. Here’s the lesson my 6th graders are doing this week:

We’re being required to use google classroom to distribute everything, although from there we can send them any number of places. I know some are using nearpod . For what I’m doing, staying in google classroom seems to work just fine.

I have a number of students who didn’t do what they were required, but no problems were reported from the majority who did.  I’m calling that a victory!

Thanks for sharing!
